Jordan Levy

The Molly Moment - Each Monday @ 4:00 we'll profile a missing child as we try to fight the constant battle against sex offenders. Find info on missing children across the country at www.missingkids.com

Every other Monday @ 5:20 we'll get a peek at what's inside InCity Times. Editor/Publisher Rosalie Tirella or one of the contributing writers will give us the scoop on Worcester's Neighborhood Newspaper

One Monday a month Scott Zoback from Worcester Magazine and Andy Lacombe from Charter Channel 3  join us in stuido for a news roundtable. They'll talk about the issues facing Central Mass. - on a local, state, and national level.

Lt. Governor Tim Murray joins us every other week for a discussion of whats going on at The State House. Having one of Worcester's own up on Beacon Hill certainly gives our listeners unprecedented access into the corner office.

The City Council may be on their 'summer schedule' but that doesn't mean there isn't anything going on @ City Hall. We'll use Wednesdays to rotate through the City Council - and anyone else who collects a paycheck from the city - to talk about the issues and answer the questions that arrise as the thermometer continues to climb.

Under The Bus Fridays
- If you're not familiar with it, you don't know what you're missing. We wrap up the week with a chance for you to get what is bothering you off your chest. Throw 'em 'Under The Bus!' Jordan will come with his candidates for UTB. And we'll give you plenty of time to let us know yours.. Call in (508) 755-0058 or Email in your nominations jordan@wtag.com

By now most of you have heard of and read at least 1 issue of The Levy Letter. But there are still a few of you that must have been on a 3 month fishing trip who aren't familiar with it. So here it is again...

In a nutshell, it's Jordan in print. We gave him a pen and paper (he's old school - doesn't use a computer like many of the rest of us) and said go to town. It's like listening to show, but its on paper (FINE! Maybe that's not a good analogy) News, opinion, facts & figures, humor, stats, and everything you expect when you say the name Jordan Levy. And it's different from what you hear on the show and read on his blog.

IT'S TIME FOR A DEBATE!
Tuesday 08-19-2008 4:21pm ET
8/19/08

After having the opportunity to interview both Democratic candidates for the United States Senate, their is no other reason than sheer arrogance for the incumbent John Kerry to ignore the challenge of little known Edward O'Reilly for the nomination. O'Reilly after all shocked the insider democratic convention by getting far more than the fifteen percent necessary to challenge Kerry. No matter how Kerry's people want to spin it, a 24 year incumbent U.S Senator, in Dark Blue Massachusetts should be able to ice skate to re-election. Kerry will most likely win; name, money, visibility, organization, connections, friends; all point to a decisive victory for Kerry in September and November. So, why won't he give O'Reilly a debate, a chance to outline just how effective you've been for Massachusetts over the past 24 years? Some may say it's Kerry's typical I'm better than you attitude; others would say he's smart. Whatever you may choose it's wrong. No one running for office, especially for the United States Senate should ever refuse or duck a challenge to stand up and describe and defend their record; unless of course they're not proud of it. John Kerry's got plenty of time to debate, but he won't, and thats exactly why 18 percent of insider democrats at their convention publicly rebuked him. And by the way who came up with this Kerry on the corner thing? The John Kerry's of this world can't find the neighborhoods never mind hanging around on the corners of them. IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MAYORS RACE
Tuesday 08-19-2008 3:58pm ET

8/17/08

I've just got through reading two very similar analytical looks at last week city council meeting. Quite honestly I don't see the problem with councillors still carrying feelings about last years Mayors race. That would be  too simple an explanation. Sure, you can bet on it there's bad blood on the council, there is and always was. Sure there are petty jealousies, always were. Sure that as every city councillor looks up at the Mayors chair they individually want to be sitting in it and feel they are better qualified; but Tuesday's  fiasco was far more. It was about vision; about future; about closing your eyes and seeing a picture of a vibrant center city. It was about encouraging investment, from the hot dog vendor to the major office tenant. It was about showing potential investors that Worcester really has changed from the place you can't do business; to a welcoming, we can get it done, visionary city. Unfortunately we saw the same old talk, from the same old council that lacks the guts to say no to a power structure that has crippled this city for years. Outlawing street vendors, measuring how far they are from a door, limiting their hours on the street, all this and more as store after store stays empty for years, parking garages that have been there and new ones stay empty; taxes go up; and a true visionary like Mike O'Brien needs to deal with a pre-school class of elected officials every week. This past weeks debate showed some hope from some of the council, Rosen, Germaine, Rushton and Toomey seemed to get it; but it's not this issue all of them have to get. They need a vision and they need to realize people not just at the barber shop, or coffee shop read and hear about their actions, and those actions have ramifications. I wish it was as simple as a few councillors or Mayor who didn't like each other, unfortunately that's not it, it's far deeper than that. It's about some councillors who just haven't got the vision or courage to allow Worcester to grow up and deal with the growing pains.About shutting the city down by 9pm, so we can all be tucked into our beds ready to face no challenges tomorrow. THIS IS TODAYS BLOG> let me know what your thoughts are by writing to me at jordan@wtag.com

SCHOOL BELL'S ARE READY TO RING: WHERE'S OUR SUPERINTENDANT?
Tuesday 08-19-2008 3:53pm ET
8/15/08

Well your guess is probably better than mine, because I have no ideas. The doors to the Worcester Public Schools will swing open in less than two weeks, and when they do they will be without a permanent Superintendent of Schools. I find that inexcusable; seeing that the current holder of the job gave the School Committee and the Mayor his notice over 222 days ago. So where is the process now? Not a single word from any of the committee or the Mayor. Don't you think they owe the kids, their parents, and us the taxpayers at least monthly updates. Have members of the committee and the Mayor been communicating with each other? Have they been e-mailing each other with updates? Has this been a violation of the open meeting law? What progress has been made by the search committee hired to do a Nation wide search? What happened to the special ad hoc committee appointed by the mayor? Have they been meeting? Have they had discussions with the firm? Have they decided anything yet? All of this and more; question after question, with not only no answer, but a level of arrogance by the committee and Mayor that seems to permeate this critical decision. It seems that their lack of public discourse, sends a direct statement to the parents, staff, and taxpayers; that the 24000 kids and the excess of 100 million of taxpayers dollars, all amount to it's none of your business attitude, and we'll tell you when we want to. Over 200 days, how absurd. By the way, where's the outrage? THIS IS TODAYS BLOG> WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? LET ME KNOW AT jordan@wtag.com
I'M STILL STEAMED!
Thursday 08-14-2008 4:32pm ET
8/14/08

Here it is, Thursday morning and I'm still steamed over the city council's Tuesday meeting. First if you watched it, my condolences. If that was anywhere near a properly run meeting then I'm a Martian. It was near bedlam, and chaos: but that's not what I'm steamed over, it was the lack of vision and outright contempt for the little guy that's got me in a rage. The discussion was about street vendors. Licensed little businesses selling food and wares from a pushcart. Who could feel threatened by them? Well evidently a few restaurants and bars, and of course 6 members of the city council. Every little city and every large city adds to the flavor and charisma of their business districts by encouraging licensed vendors to peddle their wares on the streets, but this is Worcester; and no matter how hard the City Manager tries this place lacks vision and excitement. The lack of a city council majority that understands what it will really take to make business flourish and downtown to come alive is a death knell for Worcester's future. The problem with the majority of this council is that they only sign the back of the payroll checks never the front. They have spent their lives working for someone else, never putting their money or ingenuity into making even a small business work. Outside investors want progressive communities not old fashioned, play it safe, little time thinkers who are afraid a few hot dog vendors will interfere with the entrenched downtown or Shrewsbury Street businesses. This city council is one of the worst in a long long time. So let's continue to talk big, act small, and die on our feet. Real progress takes progressive leadership, something this city council just doesn't and never will have. THIS IS TODAY'S BLOG> WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? LET ME KNOW AT jordan@wtag.com
WHEN MONEY COUNTS!
Wednesday 08-13-2008 5:10pm ET
8/13/08

Senator John Kerry who is running for re-election after twenty four years in the Senate has an opponent. A lawyer from Gloucester by the name of Ed O'Reily. I had the opportunity yesterday to have Ed on my show. When you first see him there's a stark resemblance to Joe Kennedy. The hair, teeth, smile, eyes, even the voice. He's a charming guy, a good talker, an easy interview. He seems passionate in his mission to unseat Kerry, and like all opponents thinks he has a real chance. Well, no one ever really knows until all the ballots are counted; but this guy has a HUGE MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB TO TAKE KERRY OUT IN THE PRIMARY. First and foremost O'Reilly has 250,000 thousand dollars in his campaign fund, Kerry has 8.8 million. Bucks don't vote but they certainly massage the message. Secondly, as much as Kerry's personality and dis-engagement in day to day Massachusetts politics may have made him a somewhat easier mark; it would take a huge machine, well connected, and well financed to take Kerry out in a primary, that will have somewhere around a measly 400,000 votes. So, O'Reilly, when it's all said and done will have to probably settle for a victory of challenge. He went to the Democratic Convention against the Kerry machine and got on the ballot. That in itself was an embarrassment to Kerry, but realistically, that's about as far as one could hope to get in todays world of big bucks politics. The fisherman, turned fireman, turned lawyer, turned candidate, has run the table. He'll cause Kerry a migraine for the next five weeks, I can guarantee that by his interview; but in the end Kerry will prevail, because that's the way it is, always was in the wacky world of Massachusetts insider politics.THIS IS TODAYS BLOG> WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHTS? A GROWING COMMITTMENT

Quietly, without much fanfare; just as it's President Charles F. Monahan has done all of his life, the Worcester Campus of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy has taken another giant leap of faith in downtown Worcester. The announcement that the college will purchase for classroom and general use the vacant Protocol building adjacent to it's current and expanded footprint is another giant step for downtown Worcester. The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy has been more than just another college in Worcester long tradition of great institutions. This college from the very beginning had a total commitment to downtown. Along with it's classrooms it converted the old printers building into dorm space bringing hundreds of young adults to downtown as their home. With it the hundreds of thousands of dollars and supportive businesses. Their attempt to turn downtown into a neighborhood proves the viability of the concept. As announced most recently by Governor Patrick and Lt. Governor Murray, Worcester has been designated the base of stem cell and biological innovation. In order for that to work, the population needs to be trained in a variety of areas. The Mass College of Pharmacy and Allied Sciences fits the bill. It's truly refreshing and uplifting to see one of Worcester's own, a Vernon Hill kid, who started at Leavitt 's Drug store on Vernon Street  not only make good; but to bring it home for all of us to benefit from.
